What was I thinking??
I have passed this place a million times and never stepped foot through the door. Quality Bakery is truly a Gem hiding in plain site. I will never be able to pass this place again without looking to see if the open sign is on. There's an amazing variety of baked goods in the glass fronted display cases and the aromas are delicious. In addition to French bread, doughnuts, twists, cinnamon rolls and breakfast muffins, there are cupcakes and cookies of all kinds including frosted cookies for special occasions and king cakes. I tried several items and all of them were fantastic. I was also pleasantly surprised that one of my favorite po-boy spot's Ben's Deli gets their french bread fresh from this bakery. Also, the prices were easily some of the cheapest I have experienced for a fresh bakery! Makes you wanna go now, right? I suggest getting their early. When they sell out they close the doors. Generally their business hours are 6am - 2pm Tuesday - Friday and 6am - 10am on Sat.
While, I was there I had the honor of meeting the current bakers. This mom and daughter team are 3rd and 4th generation family members who are carrying on the bakery's legacy. During my conversation I learned that this bakery has been in business since 1949......... I felt cheated that this was my first time in! I was intrigued with the history of the business so, I decided to check them out on Facebook here is what I gathered....
Quality Bakery was established in Gulfport, MS in 1949 by James A. McKnight Sr. and was originally located on 13th Street. In 1970 the business moved to its present location on highway 49 and James eventually passed the apron to his son, Al. These days the bakery is run by third generation family members, Patrick McKnight and Alesia McKnight LeBatard, affectionately called Lee Lee who are training up the next generation of bakers to take over the business whey they retire. We expect many more years of delishous sweet treats from this family for years to come.
